Data recovery is the method to salvage data from corrupted, damaged, failed, or inaccessible secondary media storage devices when it cannot be accessed normally. Often the data is being salvaged from storage media devices such as CDs, DVDs, RAID, hard disk drives, storage tapes and other electronic devices. Data backup may be essential due to physical damage to the storage device or any logical damage to the file system that may prevent it from being mounted by the host operating system.

To get data back the most common "data recovery" scene involves an operating system (OS) failure in which case the goal then is simply to copy all important files to another disk. This is easily accomplished with a Live CD, most of which will provide a means to mount the system drive and to move the files from the system disk to the backup media device with a file manager or an optical disc authoring software. Such cases can often be extenuated by disk partitioning and storing valuable data files (or copies of them) on another partition from the replaceable OS system files.

Another premise involves a disk-level failure, such as a compromised file system or disk partition or a total hard disk failure. In any such case, the data cannot be read easily. Depending on the current situation various solutions involve - partition table or master boot record, repairing the file system, or hard disk recovery techniques which range from software based recovery to hardware replacement. If data recovery from hard disk is necessary, the disk may itself have failed permanently.

In a third premise, files have been "deleted" from a storage device. Usually, deleted files are not deleted immediately, instead references to those files in the directory structure will be removed, and the space they take is made available for overwriting. And in the meantime, the original file can be restored. Data recovery services deliver such services for all types of backup and recovery.

Although there is some level of confusion over the term, "data recovery, there may also be used in the context of forensic applications and espionage.
