Windows XP Upgradation, Reinstallation or Repairing Results in Data Loss - Computers - Data Recovery

When a user upgrades, reinstalls or repairs Windows XP operating system, data loss might occur. This data loss generally occurs due to overwriting of files (as in My Documents, Desktop, Local Settings etc. folders), file system issues and more. In such situations, the user needs to restore the data from an updated backup file or directory. If the user does not have an updated backup or any backup he needs to use effective Data Recovery Software to successfully recover valuable files like official documents, e-mail, pictures etc.

In such scenario, a user upgrades, reinstalls or repairs Windows XP operating system and discovers that all his data stored in the Default User folder and All Users folder has been lost. The user also encounters loss of documents, pictures, music files, items in Startup group that were stored in the Shared Documents folder.

Such upgrades or repair operations always warn us about data loss and even show us messages pertaining to backup when we start the Windows setup. We need to be cautious and proactive to take complete data backup and avoid any panic due to data loss later.

The data loss can occur under these three conditions: When the user upgrades the computer system to Windows XP Home edition on a preinstalled Windows XP Professional computer system.

When the user repairs Windows XP using these steps:

Starts the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM

Presses Enter to set up Windows XP

Presses R to repair the selected installation

When the user reinstalls Windows XP operating system in the same folder by clicking Upgrade after executing the Winnt32.exe file.

Data loss in the above three scenarios occurs if the Undo_guimode.txt file is present in the WindowsSystem32 folder on the hard drive. Undo_guimode.txt file is created by the wizard that runs when the user first starts Windows XP operating system. To resolve the above issue, the user needs to restore the lost data and program shortcuts from a recent backup. But if the user has not maintained any back up for the lost data, then the user needs to use a thirty party application named Data Recovery Software.
